In the figurative sense,
two words are often said to be synonymous if they
have the same connotation:
"a widespread
impression that... Hollywood was synonymous with
immorality" (Doris Kearns Goodwin)
However, others say, No two
words mean exactly the same thing. There really are no such
things as synonyms.
On the other hand, people,
places and things can have characteristics that become
synonymous.
Harry is a good man and his
name has become synonymous with virtue.
